Description

Update:  I have a new version which preserves more visibility, is less bulky, and more drop-proof here (but requires a large bed printer):

Many trucks have the backup camera on the tailgate which renders it unuseable if hauling a load with the tailgate down.  This is an assembly which holds mirrors in a pentaprism configuration to reflect the image 90 degrees such that the image remains un-inverted.

In addition to the 3d print, you will need:

  1. super-glue or similar

  2. 6 100mm square acrylic mirrors

  3. 6 32mm neodymium cup magnets

  4. Gaffers tape or similar

  5. ~4mm bungee cord or similar

Instructions:

  1. Print both halves in something strong like PETG

  2. Glue the halves together

  3. Important! Using a razorblade, shave off any bumps or high points on the mirror support surfaces (otherwise the mirrors will warp and distort the image).

  4. Remove the adhesive backing and apply six 100mmx100mm mirrors.  Three on each surface.  Do not remove the protective cover yet.

  5. Important!  Ensure the screws that came with the magnets are flush or slightly below the magnet surface.  Mine were not.  Either grind/sand the screws until they are or find different screws.  Otherwise they will scratch the vehicle surface and the magnets will not create a strong enough contact.

  6. Attach the six magnets using the prepared screws from step 5.

  7. Apply a layer of gaffers tape to avoid magnets scratching the tailgate

  8. Thread bungee cord through the long hole and add carabiners or similar to clip to the tailgate straps.

I have tested this at speeds up to 65mph however, depending on the strength of your magnets, thickness of the tape, etc. yours may adhere better or worse so always ensure the backup cord is attached to the truck so it doesn't become a road hazard should it come off.
