Description

TL;DR - This box will hold an LM2596 buck converter and a SP110e addressable RGB LED controller in a tidy package with room for cable management.

This is probably more description than this goofy thing needs, but here goes.

I love building things with Arduino, ESP, etc. but sometimes an existing product is far more than adequate. Enter the SP110e LED HUE controller. It's tiny, Bluetooth enabled, and an app already exists that's not completely terrible. However, sometimes I want to use them in an automotive application where voltage can be unreliable. Some of the 12v LED strips don't like the upwards of 14.5v of a car. Sometimes you're a knucklehead and order 5v strips instead of 12v ones (It's me, I'm that knucklehead). Not to mention some of the sketchy mounting involved that should have the option to include some waterproofing.

So, I made this overly simple box. I left ample room to manage wires internally. There are a couple of M3 mounting screw holes in the bottom. Originally the LM2596 was mounted with screws, but my M3 screw heads were too big so I went to a “clip” style that does retain the board nicely. The “hoop” for the SP110e has a hole for an m3 retaining screw. The lid also attaches with M3 screws. For the SP110e and lid retention, M3x8 should work fine.

In the photos, I opted to add some 3M PDR hot glue (which is much stronger than hobby store hot glue) for waterproofing and retention. This is particular instance will be mounted in a John Deere Gator and will see more vibration & moisture than most normal applications. I intended to fill the text with black UV resin, but I got lazy and just traced it (poorly) with a sharpie.

I'm including my F3d model as well so you can customize it. I openly admit I'm a hack in Fusion, so if you improve the model let me know so I can link to and credit you. I used @BarbedWire_2197159's awesome LM2596 model and hastily modeled the SP110e myself just to get placement and figure out retention.
