Description

Overview:

I didn't trust two small nails to secure my newly built Lego Milky Way kit, so I decided to make something more sturdy to mount it to my wall. My apartment had a TV mounting bracket in my bedroom, so I decided to use that to mount my model on. Works great, super sturdy!

Bill of materials:

1x Printed mounting plate

2x Printed locking blocks

4x 25 mm long M3 screws (for locking blocks)

4x 6 mm long M3 brass inserts (for locking blocks)

4x 10 mm long M6 screws (for mounting plate attachment)

4x 6 mm long M6 brass inserts (for mounting plate attachment)

Optional materials:

Another set of 4x M6 screws/inserts if even more rigid mounting bracket attachment is desired

Assembly:

1) Press fit all heat set inserts into their respective holes. I used the outer four holes of the adapter plate for my M6 inserts, but you can use both inner and outer if desired for additional sturdiness. If the locking block M3 inserts are inserted and cause slight bulging of the sides, use a flat surface to press the block onto to ensure all edges are square.

2) Make sure the long end of the locking blocks fit into their cutouts on the mounting plate with as little force as possible while still ensuring a relatively tight fit. Some sanding may be required depending on printer settings as well as with how square you were able to keep the blocks during the heat set insert fixation process.

2) Slide the locking blocks into the nail hooks of the rear of the Milky Way set. They only fit in one way, and should end up being flush fitting with the bottom of the black hanging Lego pieces. If these are too snug to fit at first, some sanding may be required.

3) The mounting plate attaches by sliding nine of the squares of the Lego model into their respective slots of the plate. Ensure that the square holes for the locking blocks are facing the top of the model. If the locking blocks don't easily fit into said holes at this stage that is okay, they will be persuaded into fitting during the next step.

4) Insert the four M3 screws into the rear of the mounting bracket into the locking blocks. Tighten like you would tighten lug nuts on a car, ensuring that each screw is tightened evenly with the others. This process should force the blocks to insert themselves into the plate with little effort.

5) Now that the plate is attached to the model, we must now attach the plate to the TV mount! Simply screw in the desired number of M6 screws into the TV mounting plate, then into the brass inserts in our adapter plate. Tighten these as you did with the prior set of screws, like lug nuts.

That't it! I have included the .STEP files in case anyone wants to modify the mount to fit onto other mounting types or in case anyone has any improvement ideas. Obviously the mount is going to be as sturdy as the amount of material you put into it, I found that 3 walls with a .6 mm nozzle at .72 mm line width and 0.2 mm layer height gave a very sturdy plate. I used 15% support cubic infill, which made it plenty stiff for my purposes when printed in PETG.
