STORY / BACKGROUND:
I decided my otherwise-stock e-bike needed some accessories, this model is the second idea I thought of after I designed and printed the cupholder unit: https://www.printables.com/model/951772-sohamo-e-bike-cupholder-unit
Like many E-bikes, motorcycles, etc., a center display for the rider is important. This device is a mounting unit/bracket for a smartphone, that serves as an information center for the rider although not connected to electronics of the e-bike itself. It's a way to hold your smartphone at the right secure angle to your eyes for your audio, navigation, and even recordable dashcam needs.
After a few prototypes, I kept adding features and changing it, then testing. You can trust this model has been built and tested thoroughly for its purposes.
This model is free for anyone to use and modify. STEP files included as well as SOLIDWORKS native 3D model. I can help modify to your specific phone, if you wish.
See the file 24AUG24_Layout.pdf to learn about the FEATURES below.
FEATURES:
- Uses the existing top center handlebar mount, 2 existing M5 bolts that hold the handlebar and its rotation (see picture)
- Platform is designed specifically for my now-ancient Apple Iphone 8S inside my “Spigen” Case. Platform can be modified to alter the size.
- A lens holder that utilizes the back camera for a fisheye 190 degree lens for a dashcam setup. Links to the lens below.
- A speaker shape that helps broadcast the audio coming back to the rider (I use for Spotify or other Apps). This is designed for the Iphone 8/8S, but could be the correct location for your phone model also.
- TPU attachments at the attachment of bracket area ("Gasket") to help grip the handlebars (anti-rotation, dampening, firm compression grip) and a small shape ("Cushion") at the bottom of the Platform to eliminate rattling and other vibration.
- An easy-to-use slide bar across the top for loading/unloading the smartphone and keeps it from coming out. Also it provides some counterpressure against the Cushion to the smartphone.
- An external USB powerpack (common size) for more battery life, as using a dashcam at 16 fps or a navigation app drains the smartphone battery much faster.
PRINTING:
For all parts except CUSHION and GASKET, I used PLA Pro/Plus. A stiffer material LIKE ABS, ASA, PC, MYLON, or CF will work. I would not recommend basic PLA or silk PLA as this design is a structural item, but you may have results that are satisfactory if you choose to do so.
The CUSHION and GASKET need to be TPU, I used shore 95A. These parts need to be soft!
PARTS/FASTENERS REQUIRED:
- 4x M4x20mm Bolts
- 4x M4 Hex Nuts
- Fisheye Camera lens (link to the one used, others likely similar:
https://tinyurl.com/bdfrdy7d - Iphone 8/8S or similar, with dimensions 64mm x 84mm x 11mm with a protective case. Mine is a SPIGEN brand.
It is likely these exact dimension will not match your phone model and case. Modification of the PLATFORM part can be completed in a CAD program, STEP files are included to modify as needed. - USB Portable Power Back, if desired. I use a cube- shaped 2000 mAh as it was easiest to design for, that is often a giveaway at trade shows or promo items (as seen in picture).
Again, it is likely the power bank you wish to use is not the same; the platform walls and shapes can be extended to fit in CAD software, as needed. - A small power cable to attach the phone to the power bank to the phone, Lighting (Apple) or USB-C (if desired). Smaller is better, but could be bundled and secured if desired.
ASSEMBLY AFTER PRINTING:
- Place the M4 nuts into the back of the PHONE HOLDER BRACKET.
- Using 4x M4 bolts, attach the PHONE HOLDER PLATFORM to the PHONE HOLDER BRACKET and tighten.
- On the bike, remove the Handlebar cover and the M5 bolts. Be sure to not to let your handlebar droop or spin from not being held.
- Place the PHONE HOLDER GASKET between the bike handlebar and the PHONE HOLDER BRACKET and re-attach to the bike using the stock M5 bolts, dropping them down the access holes. Temporary tighten, squeezing the gasket and make sure handlebars on the bike are in the desired position, and then final tighten.
- Remove the PHONE LENS COVER and insert the Fisheye lens, lens facing the ground. Rest this lens assembly into the PLATFORM and make sure the anti-rotation tab lines, completely seating it.
- Add the CUSHION to the lower area of the platform. This acts as both a stop and some resistance to final assembly so the phone doesn't move while riding.
- Slide the Phone into the Platform and use the SLIDE part to retain it at the top. The SLIDE has an arrow to show the direction, and there are features on the platform that act as a guide. If this is too tight, you will need to modify the CUSHION part slightly. A snug fit is ideal.
- A USB 2000battery pack can be slid into the receptacle on the side, and attached to the Phone.
