Description

After I lost my Prism Kite's (a Quantum 2.0) lines winder in the sand at the beach one day, I had several very frustrating nights of untangling expensive kite line.  I never wanted to do THAT again, so while I ordered a new one from the company, I also wanted to see if I could just print one faster than they could ship it to me :).

I was surprised I couldn't find something of this style and sturdiness on a brief search, so I rage-modeled one after giving up on untangling my lines tonight.

Shown here in Bambu Transparent brown PETG, and Prusament Carmine Red PETG.  The red one is shown next to the black OEM design from Prism Kites.

Printing

Printed at 0.2 layer height, 100% solid (6 top/bottom layers) with 5 walls.  Since this part is meant to be reasonably stiff and it's relatively thin, printing it solid gives you a nice comfortable winder that doesn't threaten to fall apart and comes out to ~58-60g of PETG, which is really not too bad.

PLA might be fine here , but I didn't use it because the sun might soften it in a car or outside too easily, and that could be unpleasant if your lines lost tension and somehow got tangled.  I'm sure polycarbonate , nylon, ASA, etc. would be fine though.

Usage

This design is inspired by the Prism Kite Company's excellent and simple winder design (shown side by side in the photo) that allows you to wrap either a rubber band or a piece of 2 mm shock cord (also called bungee/elastic cord) around your lines after you wind them.  If using shock cord, you can knot it as shown in the photos with the black one.  Make sure you wind in a figure-8 / overlap style (and not just in circles) for best results to keep lines from coming loose.

Versions

I recommend the solid core design here , but I've also provided an option with an internal modifier object that you can set to an infill style of your choice to get different effects, as shown here.  I have not tested this version myself:
