Description

This is a remix of Illuminated Pencil Holder Inspired by The Flash from DC by Jose Aveleira.  I remade the design in OpenSCAD so I could make easy customizations.  Supports a variety of backlight panel sizes / thicknesses, and the logo can be swapped.

Printing As-Is:

If you just want to match my build photos, you can print out as-is using the .3mf file.

  • Open the .3mf file in PrusaSlicer.
  • Only print one object at a time to reduce failures.
  • The two larger shapes are the exterior walls, print in black.
  • The two medium shapes are the inner walls, print in translucent purple.
  • The small logo puck is printed first in clear, and then black. Add a color change after the second layer.

Seams are randomized, and wall thickness is a multiple of 0.4mm (nozzle size), so cleanup should be minimal.  I used a hobby knife, tweezers, and hot air to cleanup the small lines on the logo puck.

Additional Parts:

Amazon links provided, you can find cheaper on aliexpress.

  • USB EL Driver: https://amzn.to/3MzSFoA
  • Round EL Panel: https://amzn.to/3XwkILQ

Use your Own Logo

You may also design your own logo :D  The logo hole diameter is 39mm for a 43mm EL panel.  The design openSCAD file is included for easy adjustments.

Logo cutout is blank / not included in the design files.  I recommend finding a flat round model you like on printables.  Then scale to fit the hole.  Print together using prusaslicer's add part feature, or glue in place.  Logo hole size is based on the size of your backlight panel in the customizer.

I designed my logo puck by finding a black and white image I liked from google photos, and converting to SVG then to STL (search google for online converters).  Finally, using PrusaSlicer to merge the following:

  • 41mm x 0.4mm diameter cylinder
  • 39mm x 1.65mm diameter cylinder
  • Logo stl as a negative volume, positioned above the 0.4mm line.
  • Color change at 0.4mm, so the first two layers print in clear filament and the rest in black.

Holder Adjustments:

This design is customizable so you can easily fit different backlight panel sizes.

  • Open the .scad file in OpenSCAD (free)
  • Look for the Customizer panel.  Open from Window menu > Customizer
  • Adjust the parameters as needed:
    • xyz will change the overall dimensions
    • want will enable/disable different parts
    • reserved defines dimensions of your electronics
  • Press F5 to Preview, and F6 to Render, and F7 to make the stl.

Printing Your Own:

  • Open the stl in PrusaSlicer
  • Click the Split to Parts button, or right click the object > Split > to Parts
  • Press A to auto arrange the part set
  • Enable Supports Everywhere

Optional, Print the Logo together

The default above assumes you will print the logo as a separate object and then glue into the pencil holder.  However, if your logo is simple enough, you may embed it directly into the exterior wall object.

  • To add a logo, right click the exterior wall part > Add Part > Load
    • Select the second stl to be used as the logo
    • Scale, Move, Fit as needed
  • Optional: Print the logo puck separately and use color change to include clear filament as a light diffuser.
