:: DISCLAIMER :: BUILD AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

This is a DIYbio centrifuge designed and assembled by Maker Zoo in collaboration with F.Lab, Thailand's first DIYbio lab.

Features:

-a rotor capable of accepting (6) 1.5 mL tubes commonly used in DNA extraction and other genetic lab protocols.

  • a cover using 3mm diameter, 20mm long nut and accompanying bolt for a hinge
    -mounting for a drone motor
-space inside for ESC (electronic speed controller for motor), Arduino Nano, DC jack, switch, and potentiometer.

Video: https://youtu.be/LXfSYA7idDM

The cover opens to 120 degrees giving maximum working space when rotor is not in use.

We haven't finished setting up the electronics, but will put all the details up in an Instructable when it is finished.

:: WARNING :: Centrifuges store tremendous energy in their spinning rotors. A failure of the rotor can turn fragments of it, tubes, and other components into projectiles capable of causing physical harm. ALWAYS operate a centrifuge with the cover firmly in place. ALWAYS operate a centrifuge with the rotor loaded in a balanced manner (if you place a tube on one side, make sure another of equal mass is placed opposite of it, even if you only need to spin one).

If you do not know how to use a centrifuge, PLEASE do some research before attempting to build and/or operate your own!!!

We have had no problems with ours. We printed it out very carefully, made sure the motor and accompanying rotor were assembled in a balanced fashion, and did many tests under controlled conditions before even placing the first 2 test tubes in it.
