Description

I liked the design from InAppDesigns but boy did it look like alot of work to install so I remixed his stepper cover and scratch built a new open chain design.

This is my solution to adding a cable chain. This design incorporates the following goals:

  1. Install without major tear-down and reassembly of printer
  2. Not have to re-run all the wires
  3. Maintain full X and Z-Travel at Z=200mm
  4. Installs Quickly
  5. Links do not come apart or break easily
  6. No binding of any kind

Instructions:

Print:

18 Top Links
17 Bottom Links
1 Attachment link
1 Stepper motor Mount
1 Wire Cover

Install Cover over stepper secure to stepper motor with one M3X8mm screw as seen in picture. Route wires (Refer to pictures) install wire cover with two M3x5mm screws.

Remove all but 12" of the original split loom

Install links alternating between top and bottom links around the wires.

Mount the last attachment link with some 3M tape or a Command strip use picture as reference.

That's it.

Note: To remove cover simply unlink the chain at the attachment link and pull chain away. No need to remove attachment link.

Note: Those of you who are having problems with links breaking make sure you use a high enough temperature for good layer bonding. I have been using 210C for hatchbox. The links are very tough to break at these settings. The top links are arched so you shouldn't need supports. If you do, then your print cooling may be inadequate. These are Awesome: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:821080. I would use 40x40x15mm or 40x40x10mm fans since the 20mm deep fans do not clear the Robo 3d cover at high Z travel.

Update 1/7/16: I figured out how to change the coordinate system on my STL files so I have updated all the STL files to be oriented correctly for printing. No supports needed on any of them.
