Summary

A simple project to get young minds introduced to 3d printing and 3d modeling software. A pen holder is a simple yet useful first time project for beginners and can be uniquely customized too people wants and needs.

How I Designed This

These pen holders where designed by using 3d modeling software called Creo parametric.
To begin the rough size of the pen holder was determine and a block that size was placed. Using the tools on Creo material was removed from the block to create a cool design for a pen holder. Some basic things to keep in mind is how wide the pens are and how big of a hole you need to put them it.

            <div><p>Objectives:<br>-students would be expected to learn how to create basic shapes and manipulate them in a way to create a "pen holding device"<br>-students would be expected to learn how to create their own personalized designs and how to use 3d modeling software<br>-students would be expected to learn how 3d modeling machines work on a basic level</p><p>Audience: For grade 6-8 range, no prior skill need only the ability to operate a computer or ability to communicate your ideas to some else that would operate the computer if they are unable to (disabilities, injuries, etc). </p><p>Preparation:<br>-Students will need access to computers with applicable 3d modeling software such as Creo Parametric, autocad, etc.<br>-No previous 3D design experience is required for students<br>-A teacher that is familiar with the 3d modeling software being used in order to provide help if the students have any questions<br>-This can be done in groups or alone</p><p>Steps:<br>1)Firstly in their groups or alone students will start the brainstorming process to starting thinking of their design<br>2) once they have an idea several rough sketches should be made to smooth out rough details<br>3) Once the students have a rough sketch designed that has been approved by a teacher they are to create it using 3d modeling software<br>4) the designs can be adjusted as need on the 3d modeling software if the students realize that their design will not work for some reason.<br>5) once the students are done the 3d modeling on the computer the teacher will review the model and point out any errors or parts that might not print well<br>6) then with the help of the teacher the students will create and stl file to print<br>7) they can then watch there create be printed in front of there eyes then come back in a few hours once it is completed.<br>8) once the "pen holder" has completed printing the students will test them out and comment on how they could have made their design better or what works well about their design as it is.</p><p>Result: By the end of the activity students should have a better understanding of how 3d printing works and what it is capable and should be able to create basic designs on 3d modeling software. In order for grading students could be graded on a formal report after printing saying how they came up with their idea, what features they wanted in their design then how they could have made their design better etc. Marks could also be given for the ability to do group work/ how well they get a long with others</p></div>
