Summary

In this project the students are to design "chalk holders" using 3d modeling software in groups. After they have completed their design the students will present their designs to the class and the class will vote on which design they like the best to be printed and then used in the classroom. This is a sample of what a design could be, there are dimples on the back if you want to attach magnets or there is a hook if you want to hand it on something small like a string or the flat base means it can be standing up as well.

How I Designed This

This Chalk was designed by using 3d modeling software called Creo parametric. Having a rough idea of the design in my head, it was sketched on paper then once the design was finalized it was created in Creo parametric using a subtraction of material technique. Some things to keep in mind while designing your chalk holders in how big do you want / need it? how will it attach to a wall or sit on a desk? Does it have more then one use?

Project: Chalk holder designing contest

            <div><p>-students would be expected to learn how to create basic shapes and manipulate them in a way to create a "chalk holder"<br>-students would be expected to learn how to create their designs and how to use 3d modeling softwarel</p><p>Audience: For grade 6-8 range, no prior skill need only the ability to operate a computer or ability to communicate your ideas to some else that would operate the computer if they are unable to (disabilities, injuries, etc).</p><p>Preparation:<br>-Students will need access to computers with applicable 3d modeling software such as Creo Parametric, autocad, etc.<br>-No previous 3D design experience is required for students<br>-A teacher that is familiar with the 3d modeling software being used in order to provide help if the students have any questions<br>-This will be done in groups</p><p>Steps:<br>1)Firstly in their groups students will start the brainstorming process to starting thinking of their design for a chalk holder<br>2) once they have an idea several rough sketches should be made to smooth out rough details<br>3) Once the students have a rough sketch designed that has been approved by a teacher they are to create it using 3d modeling software.<br>4) the designs can be adjusted as need on the 3d modeling software if the students realize that their design will not work for some reason.<br>5) once the students are done the 3d modeling on the computer they are to present their design to the rest of class (on the 3d software) and try to "sell" it to them as if it were a sales pitch.<br>6) After everyone has presented the class will then vote on which design they like the best<br>7) The chosen design will be the one design printed and then used in the class room.<br>8)they can then watch the creation be printed in front of there eyes then come back in a few hours once it is completed.<br>8) once the "chalk holder" has completed printing the item will be tested in the class and hopefully be used everyday.</p><p>Result: By the end of the activity students should have a better understanding of how 3d printing works and what it is capable of, and should be able to create basic designs on 3d modeling software. In terms for grading students could be graded on their designs- such as how complex or simply the design is, does it meet basic requirements established? The students could also be marked on how they work in a group environment, and how well they presented/ "sold" their item.</p></div>
