Summary

This is very simple activity for a group students to start using the Makerbot Printshop app. The idea is to let students draw on a piece of paper and then transforms does drawings into 3D shapes.

How I Designed This

Makerbot Printshop app has an option call Shape Maker, which transforms the lines of and image into a 3D printable object. It works better if you draw a black line on a white piece of paper. This allows for a higher detection value.

You will need to explains to your students how to create drawings that could transform well into 3D printed objects. That is, that the line should be continuos line and that all elements of your drawing should be connected. This is to avoid the separation of parts from the drawing once it is 3D printed.

Project: Print Shop Activity

Objectives:

            <div><p>At the end of this activity students would learn the basic design concepts on how to create a 3D object with the limitations of FDM 3D printer in mind. </p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Audiences:</strong></p>            <div><p>This activity works well with grades 1° to 3°, specially if they are being introduce to the idea of 3D printing. </p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Preparation:</strong></p>            <div><p>You need an ipad or android device. You will also need to install the Print Shop app. If you do not own a Makerbot printer you will need the Makerbot Desktop app for any desktop and mac computer</p><p>You will need sheets of white paper and black markers. </p><p>This activity works well if you have a theme in mind. It is a good excuse to make decorations for upcoming holidays or to turn any art project into a 3d printed art project.</p><p>Get comfortable with the app, try to do a test before you do it with your group. Specilly if you do not own a Makerbot Printer, since you will need to download the 3D model from the Makerbot Desktop app. </p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Steps!</strong></p>            <div><ol><li><p>Let students draw something on a with sheet of paper and with a black makers. This culd be something related to the topic you selected.</p></li><li><p>Collect all the drawings.</p></li><li><p>Scan each drawing with the Print shop app. Use the option for Shape Maker. Select and appropriated high of the object and press save. Repeat this with each drawing. </p></li><li><p>Download all the stl files form the Makerbot Desktop app.</p></li><li><p>Print each object with your selected 3D printer. </p></li><li>Deliver the final print to your students</li></ol></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Results:</strong></p>            <div><p>Students will have there own drawing into a 3D printed object.
