Description
Update 8/2/17: Thickened the parts for the shrouded setup in hopes of making it a little more robust. I have not printed the parts but they look okay in CAD. I also modified the hardware used on the thicker parts to take advantage of easier to find M4x50mm screws (per canadadry's feedback). Just sub in the (3) thickened parts as needed.
Update 4/21/16: Modified base option added that provides a slight tilt to the whole assembly as seen in the first pic.
I couldn't justify paying $60 for an off-the-shelf fume extractor so I designed this for use while soldering or dealing with other unwanted vapors. The fan is a standard 12V 120mm case fan and the filter is 130mm x 130mm x 10mm (link in parts section). It also employs an on/off switch and power jack.
There are a couple of configuration options:
Additional Parts Needed
(1) 120mm 12V case fan
(1) 130mm x130mm x 10mm carbon filter (http://www.amazon.com/Carbon-Filter-Activated-Xytronic-Absorber/dp/B005C5HUI8 or equiv.)
(1) Rocker switch (Philmore p/n 30-16705 or equiv.)
(1) DC power jack 2.1mm x 5.5mm (Philmore p/n 247 or equiv.)
(1) 12V power adapter (http://www.amazon.com/KCRIUS-Power-Adapter-Supply-2-1mm/dp/B00KG3A25Y or equiv.) Note that the recommended adapter has a fairly short cord, if you need something longer feel free to substitute.
(4) M4 x 55mm socket head cap screws
(4) M4 nuts
(4) M4 washers (if not using rear vent)
Instructions
a. If using the vent, install now and use embedded nuts to secure everything together.
b. If not using the vent, install the washers and nuts directly onto the screws, securing everything together.
7. Carefully clip Hood_B/Hood_B_with_Shroud to Hood_A.
8. Install carbon filter in the cavity created by the two hood pieces.
9. Breathe easy.
