Description

A Kamea, plural Kameoth, derives it's name from the Hebrew word for amulet. Kameoth, popularly called Magic Squares, are best known today as mathematical logic puzzles. They were a favored tool of the medieval scholar and occultist Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa.

The Kameoth have been adopted as tools of Chaos Magic, Thelema, and many other occult traditions. Traditionally, they are rooted in Gematria, an ancient Semitic tradition assigning supernatural value to words through a numerological and astrological correspondence system.

The Kamea presented here is one in the Square of Saturn, and is designed to promote discipline, and self actualization.

This is offered as part of my Open Sorcery project. I have always had an interest in this subject, so much so that I chose folklore and mythology as one of my majors in university and wrote my honors thesis on the figure of the sorcerer smith. This project is my attempt to combine the fascinating points of ancient schools of thought with the technology of the digital age.

Items such as this are usually relegated to construction from paper and ink, as few people have the skills or equipment to forge them from metal. Clay is a decent option, but can be messy and lacks precision without a practiced sculptor's steady hand. Indeed, as Kameoth are often made to serve a particular purpose, such as overcoming an obstacle in life, it can be impractical to make one of metal even if one has the means. After all, spending the time and money necessary to cast something in bronze only to retire it after a month or two can be profligate.

Using PLA I am attempting to strike a balance between durability and ease of creation. A PLA Kamea is cost effective, one 1000g roll being able to produce a great many, and more durable than one made from paper or unbaked clay.

The philosophies of ceremonial magic and the western esoteric tradition are interwoven with art history, mathematics, and psychology. They offer techniques for introspection, self awareness, and keen observation of the world around us. This side project is my way of doing my part to keep these traditions present in the digital world.
