Description
On the back of my last mod, Anet A6 Frame Secure and due to the fact I use a glass plate and was getting tired of having to unclip the glass to get to the adjustment screws for the bed height, I decided to go to bottom adjustment rather than the screws on the top.
A little side note on the standard aluminum hotplate, it's not level, remove it from your printer and put a straight edge across the diagonal corners, there's a depression in the middle. So if you adjust the corners perfectly, the central area will have a much larger gap, about 0.3mm compared to the 0.1 you set at the corners. By moving to a glass bed you even this out and get a consistent gap across the whole bed.
Again there are many similar projects out there, none of which I particularly liked so I set about making my own. This is a design from scratch project, I took careful measurements of the areas that may come close to the adjusters, and tried to make the parts as big as they could possibly be. This should be ok for an A8 printer as well though you would have to check the clearances yourself as I don't have an A8.
I went for a 5 pointed star type design to allow finger space for easy adjustment, in fact, this works so nicely you can adjust with one finger while checking the gap with your other hand. When the points are set to stick out the furthest they clear all the body work by a good 1-2mm. Again the size for the nut and the hole for the screw are intentionally snug, the nut will defo not fall out. I've included a picture on how I inserted the nuts into the knob using the nuts and bolts that came off the heated bed.
You will need to drill out the threaded section of the H bracket that the bed secures to. The thread diameter is 2.8mm, I drilled it first at 3mm and found it tended to bind a little so opened that up to 3.5mm and the bed moves perfectly freely. You need to secure the original screw securely to the heated bed with a nut, make sure it's tight or when adjusting the knob the screw will spin and no adjustment will be made.
Prints fine in Cura 2.3.1 or using Cura slicer from Repetier, print speed about 55mm/s, 0.2 layer height, 20% or higher infill, i also chose 4 perimeters to give the material around the screw holes more strength
