Description

This is my entry for the Nintendo Switch Design Challenge at MyMiniFactory (https://www.myminifactory.com/object/guardian-stand-for-the-nintendo-switch-29979). I modelled this stand after the guardian from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I loved the design of the guardian ever since I saw the first trailer for BotW, and I knew I had to have some sort of figure of it.

This stand is certainly not meant for portability, rather, it is something you can keep at home or in the office to look cool and be useful at the same time. It definitely works with other tablets and larger smartphones. I also wanted a more substantial figure of the Guardian, and while the amiibo is cool, the stock is limited and isn't exactly large enough to use as a dock. The stand primarily relies on 3 points to stay upright, the left most long leg, the right most long leg, and the head. The middle leg also helps but isn't necessary.

This was 100% modelled from scratch. I did not use any scans of amiibo or any in-game models to create this model.

The assembled guardian can be printed using the guardianwhole-final-repaired.stil file.

The individual parts (Body, Head, Head Connector, and the six legs) can be found with the rest of the files.

A few more notes regarding the print:

  • I didn't use infill for my print, and it is stable and sturdy as is. However, I do recommend using infill for further sturdiness and bulk.

  • My printer has a very small print area, so I needed to print in parts. I used hot glue as to stick even parts of the legs together, and it's still very sturdy. Hot glue works well enough, but if I print this again in parts I'd probably use epoxy or something stronger. Since I printed in parts, I was able to keep the head loose so it can pivot around.

  • It took at least 20-25 hours to completely print on my Micro M3D printer with no infill and with medium quality.
