Description
Even though there are MANY spool holders for your needs, this one solves a specific need for me. My dry box project used hangers and a rod to keep the spools supported. This works but it has a few problems. Sometimes the spools get jammed and changing one is just brown noise.
So, this model solves those problems nicely. Each spool is contained in its own roller, changing them is as easy as picking one up and setting another down, and it is the right height.
Did I mention it is the right height?!
That was the only major problem with all the other holders out there. A dry box needs the spools to be roughly in the middle of the container vertically to allow for sufficient desiccant underneath and to allow the filament to feed to the delivery tubes effectively.
As a bonus it is designed to take up very little additional horizontal space, which allows for maximum spools in your dry box space. Also, without the hangers, a much wider range of "air-tight" containers become viable for my solution.
You will need 4 608ZZ bearings for each of these you knock out. Fortunately they are very cheap! Just print off two of these kits or two plates and two of the axles and rod sets of your desired length, snap them together and you are all set.
The default kit is sized for a standard Hatchbox spool, but I will be including other axle and rod sets for other widths as I have need or get requests. (I am considering creating this as an OpenSCAD parametric project. Let me know your thoughts)
Also, don't be confused by the axle and rod set. It looks like a single piece until you finish the print and pop it apart. I was just trying to make the most efficient use of the build plate so I printed these complimentary parts as concentric cylinders.
Enjoy! and let me know your feedback. Thanks!
