Description

I had a couple of these bare USB webcams sitting in a box for a project that's not ready to get started, and I needed a webcam to record some live video. The bare design of the ELP cameras are great because there's no trendy curvy plastic shell around them, but there's also not an easy way to just have them sit on a table. The screw mount holes are also 2mm, which I do not have and can't just go buy at the hardware store.

Solution? Lock the camera PCB into a slot and put a tripod mount on it. I have plenty of tripods for reasons I don't want to publicly discuss. This also opens it up to using all sorts of tripody mounts, like those bendy gripper guys, or the teensy $1 wire leg tripods from eBay.

This fits any camera with a ~38mm wide PCB no more than 1.8mm thick and no obstructions in the first 3mm of the bottom of the PCB. There is an additional backoff of 2.6mm for components placed on the back of the PCB which is more than generous. Tested with:

  • ELP-USBFHD01M-XXX "Full 1080P" (OV2710 sensor)
  • ELP-USB100W03M-XXX "720P" (OV9712 sensor)

Note that the blue painter's tape in the photos is there to protect it from shorting out against metal bits before I made this tripod mount and is not structural or required by this mount in any way. The stabilizing brace mounts the camera board very securely and also keeps the 1/4" nut from coming out when a tripod is not attached.
