Springy Stand

Description

The 'Springy Stand' is a... 'springy stand!'

It looks great as a decorative stand to put small things on but it also wobbles and bobbles because it's springy. How springy it is depends on how much infill you apply... if you plan to use it for coins or light weight jewellery you can use minimal infill but to hold things like men's watches you need quite high infill (...or to place it in a very well balanced way).

This is a fun little stand that is approx. 110mm tall and uses 70gm filament at 50% (max. recommended) infill with a Raft. The less infill applied the more the stand will spring and bobble around... great for lightweight things but a firmer spring is required for heavier things so increase your infill. The recommended range is from 15 to 50%.

Seeing how much the infill percentage changes how firm the spring is and how much weight it will support is interesting as well... the difference from 15% to 50% is significant to say the least. If you only intend on using the 'Springy Stand' for light weight things and want it to wobbly use 15 - 20% infill... but if you want it to support a heavy mans watch use40- 50% infill and it will be a far more rigid spring.

The top storage area is 76mm in diameter at standard scale. Scaling up / down should be okay... this is a good size for all sorts of things from jewellery to small parts (that have been dissembled and need to sit in a safe place), keys, watches, memory cards etc. etc.

WARNING: This will be challenging for some machines due to the extreme angles applied however well set up / precise machines printing with PLA and effective filament cooling should have no problem. Prints from less capable machines are likely to result in prints with areas on the underside of he springs being rough... but sill perfectly useable/functional.

This print requires support but is has been designed in so 'DO NOT APPLY AUTOMATED SUPPORT' or the support may build the spring into a solid object.

The designed-in support is all up the centre of the stand and should break away relatively easily when printed on a precise well set up machine. This support is not there due to the angles applied but to stop the spring from acting as a spring during printing. The support block should snap away by depressing the spring with the print inverted and/or twisting the support from the bottom... it should be relatively easy to clear away.

However, as not all machines print as accurately / precisely as others two .stl's have been provided. On 5th Generation Replicators (+) the standard .stl version prints well and the internal support cracks away in a matter of seconds by hand. With a Replicator 2 the support sticks a fraction more so is harder to remove. For this reason there is a 'loose' version .stl which has slightly greater clearance between the designed in support and the spring body.

This is a really fun print. Choose your own color/s to create a unique little stand for yourself... and they also makes a great little (and unique) gift.

Please refer to the print settings and images for additional information.... and post images of your 'Springy Stands' in use for other members to see.
