Summary

Thingiverse almost always has what you need - and if not, it's usually got what you need to build what you're looking for. We've got folks coming in to clean our datacenter and we were saying it'd be funny to set up a time lapse. I had the GoPro, and probably could have rigged something up with the mounts I've got on hand, but decided it'd be more fun to make what I needed.

I've got two versions of the same model, one with and one without supports I added in MeshMixer. I printed both on my Monoprice Mini and found the supported one to be slightly better end result.

If you're in California, you may wish to print it thicker.</p></div>

How I Designed This

Step 1: See if anyone else made one

            <div><p>Uh... it's a GoPro mount for a drop ceiling. If anything says "action camera" less than drop ceilings, I'm unsure what. OOH wait cube wall GoPro mount (which gives me an idea)</p><p>Anyhow, no, nobody else made one - that I could find.</p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Step 2: Find parts that do what you need individually.</strong></p>            <div><p>Easy peasy - GoPro mounts are a dime a dozen around here, and there's a surprising amount of drop ceiling clips. I found <a rel="nofollow" href="/thing:2013603">this GoPro mount for an SLR hot shoe</a> and <a rel="nofollow" href="/thing:2528922">this drop ceiling clip for running cables</a> which both looked like exactly what I needed.</p></div>                <p class="detail-title"><strong>Step 3: Mashup and make your part</strong></p>            <div><p>I used MeshMixer to put the two parts together, lined things up, did a few plane cuts, and tried a boolean join. Well, MeshMixer seems to have a different idea of the results of a boolean join than I do, and the resulting part would have been an excellent low-poly modern art piece, but no longer looked like the parts that I started with. I guess I need to learn how to do that a little better. Instead, I combined the two parts into one solid, and that worked, although it messed up some of the edges. Tried printing that only to find out that I had created a 50MB STL file. That might be a wee bit more detail than absolutely necessary, so I remeshed it down to the current size.</p></div>
