Update 17/2/2018:
I finally received my filament refill from Das Filament today but unfortunately it didn't work. As it turns out without cutting the tie wraps first the filament doesn't seem to fit the spool half even without the coupler. This means that the idea of reusing old Das Filament spools by cutting them in half in general, is probably not going to work.
Fortunately, a few days ago Das Filament also released their own design for the MasterSpool, which also takes very little filament to print. So, if you're trying to save filament I recommend printing that one instead.
I really liked the idea of the MasterSpool but I didn’t want to spend 250g of filament just for printing a spool. So, I decided to follow a different approach by cutting an empty spool I already had from Das Filament in half, and design a coupler to hold the two pieces together.
And I'm glad to say that the final print ended up working surprisingly well. Pushing the two parts together and taking them apart is quite easy, while the same time everything is been held together pretty tightly. And it only takes about 30g of PLA to print.
The part is designed on FreeCAD and the design file is also available for download. So, If you want to make any changes to the design it should be pretty straightforward.
