This is a remix of my design TronXY X5S MKS Sbase 32 bit Smoothieware with 3dTouch probe which allows for different extruder nozzle heights.

I did put in a slot for an M3 nut but it is not necessary. (or strong enough). The M3 screw taps into the hole to secure the moveable plate.

It is a close fit - so the 3d Touch had to be turned around with the wires on the front this time.

Seems to work well.

Updates: New Information

I have tried a 'new' method to getting probe offset working correctly. In short this is what happens;

z -bed min limit switch is used for the offset
while 3D touch probe is used for bed leveling (tramming) z level micro adjustments.

Seems to work (so far) I haven't restarted the printer from power off to see if it works correctly - but I think it will.
I saved the above codes to 2 'scripts' that I can run quickly without typing it in every time.

Use the new "Printer startup code v2.txt" in your slicer.

How to get and set Z offset.

This is what I use, and it is working great!
I am using Printrun (called pronterface.exe) to help get bed leveling and determine the Z offset. I have enabled 6 custom tabs (running macros). Tab name and background (macro) commands follows;

Leveling Home to center. (Green Color)
a. G0 Z10 ; extruder up.
b. M280 S10.6 ; CLEAR ERRORS ON PROBE
c. M280 S7; PROBE UP
d. G28 ;Home
e. M280 S10.6 ; 3D TOUCH RESET
f. G0 Z10 ; move z axis to a height to 10 to clear extruder tip for move
g. G0 X165 Y165 Z20 F5000 ; move to center of bed and height of 20.
Leveling Set Probe Offset (Green Color) (this is poorly labeled – might be better to call it ‘Manual Z adjust’. This lowers extruder so I can manually lower it to get the height I want to call ‘zero’, hopefully high enough to not hit the bed).

Reset Probe Height (Red Color)
a. M306 z0 ; this is the command where it all happens. After setting your desired Z height. This sets/resets current Z height to 0. Do a command ‘1’ again to test.
Store Bed Leveling (Red Color)
a. M374 ; Store probe points to file. This is what remembers for next time.
b. M500 ; Store to SD card

Ok, now for how I do it. But first an important note. Smoothieware will only use the Z stop to get ‘home’. The 3dtouch is only used for determining bed leveling offsets.

First get extruder and heat bed to printing temperature. Very important as temperature will change the zero.
Issue command 1 above. (Leveling Home to center) This will home and center the extruder.
Issue command 2 above. (Leveling Home to center) This will lower the extruder to to 2mm.
Now you can use Pronterface or the printers display to lower the extruder to printing height (I use pronterface and put a piece of paper, folded for 3 layers, under to extruder) I lower it ( 0.1 mm at a time) until the paper is tight but I can still move it in and out (important – if it only moves when pulled - extruder is too low)(not sure if it matters but I have a .4 mm extruder tip).
At this point the extruder is at the desired Z point.
Issue command 5 above. Reset Probe Height.
Repeat steps 1-4. If the paper test is good continue on step 8, if not – repeat from step 4-6. (reset and try again)
Issue command 3 above. (Bed Leveling) Probe will now probe the bed. (number you have in Smoothieware).
Issue command 6 above. (Store Bed Leveling)

You are all set. Print away! I don’t use Pronterface to print as I am having trouble with my USB connection. So I load the files to the SD card and print from there.

Note: I had to replace the Z axis stop with an optical endstop as the mechanical switch was not accurate enough and the mounting bar kept flexing. There are a couple of good mounts and flags you can print on Thingiverse.

The great thing about this method? Easy and fast. This does not need to be run every time. The commands to ‘reset probe height’ and ‘Store bed leveling’ write files to the SD card. So, the printer loads these in on power-on. If you change extruder tip or bump the bed you might need to redo these steps, but I have found that I can turn the printer on, home the stops and just print. This method is very easy to do and very repeatable. No more frustration!
