Description

This is a bracket for converting a 20 qt Hefty Protect box into dry filament storage. It includes integrated holders for 4 desiccant containers as well.

Some features:

  • Maximizes interior width available for spools

  • Inexpensive aluminum angle bracket
  • Designed for standard 20cm diameter spools

I chose to use angle aluminum for the spool support since it is very rigid on its long axis relative to weight, and it also happens to usually be the cheapest material in the "metal rod" selection at the hardware store.

The desiccant holders are designed to fit the really minimalist but functional Vase Mode Desiccant Container by TempusEdaxRerum. It is quick to print, lightweight, and holds about 2.5oz of desiccant each. This provides about 10 ounces of desiccant in the box.

The bracket itself is printed in PLA. I print the desiccant containers in PETG because they are more heat tolerant and I can just thrown them in my filament dryer for a few hours to dry them out as needed. No fuss, no muss!

Bill of Materials:
2 X Bracket. This model, PLA is adequate.
4 X Desiccant Container. Recommend PETG or similar heat tolerant material so they can be placed directly in a desiccant dryer.
1 X 1/8" x 3/4" x 3/4" Aluminum Angle at least 27" long. From this, cut 2 13.5" lengths.
10 oz of 2mm or larger Silica Gel Desiccant
