Description
This is a customizable geometric neckerchief slide or woggle as they are known "across the pond." It was designed for Boy Scouts, etc. but could, of course, work for any youth or adult group.
It is a sphere with a vertical hole (for the neckerchief) and 3 holes in the side at 120 degree rotations. Between the holes, there is room for 3 letters or numbers. By default it says "BSA" (Boy Scouts of America) but you can change the text in the customizer to any 3 letters or numbers (e.g. your unit number, woodbadge course number, your initials, etc.) you want. You can also leave the text blank to get a slide with no glyphs.
(Updated to add) You can select between 'recessed' text or 'extruded' text. If 'recess' is selected, the text characters are cut into the side (first and second images). If you select 'extrude', the text pokes out of the side of the object (third image).
In addition to the text, you can also control the smoothness of the outside of the sphere. The default is 32 which gives a somewhat 'blocky' appearance. You can run it down one more step for maximum 'minecraft' look. Or run it up to the max of 120 for a very smooth outside surface.
As you can see in the photo of the printed items, it is possible to color in the recessed areas. I've found two things that work well for this. One is very inexpensive crayons (the waxier the better). The other is the engraving filler used for bowling balls. The brand I've found is Markal Lacquer Stik which you can get online at https://amzn.to/2EpDPyB for about $6 or talk to your local bowling ally pro shop. Lacquer Stiks come in 5 colors: white, black, red, yellow, and gold.
You are, of course, welcome to download the openscad file and change any of the other parameters by hand (font, size, etc.). Note that I built this and then decided it needed to be a bit larger to easily fit the neckerchief through the center hole. Because I'm lazy (that's a virtue, BTW), I just scaled the entire thing rather than try to figure out all the appropriate relative sizes (especially the font size).
