Description
This model is a “what if” design. How would a E44.5 from the Märklin would have
looked like if it would have appeared in the 1950s. I named it SEG 800 (G =
Gebirge - German for mountains). It uses the chassis of the old Märklin E44
(3008/3011/SET800) without any modifications.
The E44.5 was a special version of the German E44 for mountain lines. Eight
Locomotives and one prototype were built between 1931 and 1934. They were in
service until 1983 mainly on the Freilassing–Berchtesgaden railway.
The model is divided in three parts. The body, the roof and the windows. The
windows should be printed in transparent material. If the headlights are
operated, I suggest using a more heat-resistant material than PLA, for example
PETG.
I used RAL 6007 “Flaschengrün” (Bottle-Green) for the body and RAL 9006
“Weißaluminium” (white aluminum) for the roof. It is easier to paint the roof
and the body before gluing the parts. These colors do not match exactly the
colors used by Märklin, but are easy to buy and look plausible.
The roof and the body should be glued. Insert the windows before fastening the
roof.
The body fits to a Märklin SET 800 / 3011 Chassis without any modification. So,
the change is fully reversible. If you have a complete 3011 you already have
nearly all the parts needed. If you have a PRIMEX-E44-locomotive, you also can
use these pantographs without the base-plates.

To make the bulbs work, a wire must be soldered either to the bulb-holder or to
one bulb of each side of the loco (to the ground side) and must be connected to
the chassis.
