FASA Federation Ships: Star Trek starship parts kit expansion #2

This is the second expansion parts kit meant to complement my original Star Trek Constitution Class Parts Kit, adding parts to support several popular designs from the old FASA Star Trek role playing game. All parts are meant to be cross-compatible between parts kits.

Update 2024-11-19: Another update to the Constitution and Miranda kits leads to another update for this kit. Windows are included and details added to support larger scale prints. I’ve also added the USS Phobos, an iteration of the Loknar using fully TMP era parts (see details below). Previous version here.

Update 2023-03-30: I’ve updated to take advantage of the new higher quality parts from my recently revamped Constitution and Miranda class kits. Primary differences are more detailed saucers, and more screen-accurate command modules, impulse engines and nacelles. There are also a number of new design variants included. The previous version of the kit can still be found here.

Update 2021-03-27: I’m massively overhauled this kit to support improved detail level, mesh quality cleanup and improvements, and support for additional ship variants. Almost all of the ships parts have been rebuilt from scratch, with various levels of visual changes to the ship designs. If you’re looking for the old version, it’s been archived at the old Google drive location.

Update 2019-06-22: I've added a neat variant of the Northampton suggested by Kevin Kozoriz over on Facebook. In this option, Northampton's serve a secondary role as combat transports, carrying docked pods or daughter craft. These pods can be detached once escorted to safety and the parent ship then goes about its business. I've included a sample transport ship (christened the Kozoriz class) in the parts kit and a variant Northampton model carrying it.

Contents of this kit are broken into three zip files:

• Fed1V4-blender-files_part1.zip - The Blender source files used to generate the STL files for the Andor, Baker, and Chandley.
• Fed1V4-blender-files_part.zip - The Blender source files used to generate the STL files for the Larson, Loknar, Northampton, and Phobos.

• Fed1V4-parts-stls.zip - Individual part STL files used to build the complete ships.

Supported ships

This kit supports the following ship classes:

Andor class missile cruiser

Baker class destroyer

This kit includes two versions of the Baker. The first is based on Brad Torgersen's smaller redraw of the Baker. The second is a version for game purists based on the original FASA specifications (which is comically large for a destroyer).

Chandley class frigate

Larson class destroyer

I've included variants for the original pre-TOS version used in the 4 Years War era, a TOS version, and a version upgraded to use TMP era components, and one with command module integrated torpedo tubes.

Loknar class frigate

I've included variants for the original pre-TOS version used in the 4 Years War era, a TOS version, and a version upgraded to use TMP era components, and one with command module integrated torpedo tubes.

Phobos class frigate

This is my recreation of the USS Phobos, a Motion Picture era fan design based off the Loknar. The earliest source I can find for this design is from the 3d model found on trekmeshes.eu, attributed to Kevin Riley. My version is rebuilt completely using my own parts as a base, with newly created parts for any features my kits don’t already support.

Northampton class frigate

In addition to the Northampton herself, I'm also Including support for the Kozoriz class assault transport (an invention of Kevin Kozoriz over on the STSTCSOLD&A Facebook group). This transport docks to the Northampton for transport and then detaches for orbital or ground based assaults. Models with the transport both standalone and docked to the Northampton are in the kit.

The FASA Star Trek RPG was very popular among us older Star Trek fans who came of age in the '80s and '90s. It lost its license to produce Star Trek in 1988, seemingly because Gene Rodenberry, hot off of the success of TNG season 1, wanted to de-emphasize the military aspect of Starfleet, despite the abundance of uniforms, ranks, and 50-megaton matter-antimatter warheads that all his shows were chocked full of.

FASA Trek provided a tremendous amount of background on a Trek universe that was, in many ways, more realistic and interesting than what Rodenberry and company wanted in TNG and later shows. Although much of this background has been supplanted by later official canon, the ships from this game remain popular among old-school fans.

These designs are mostly based on the notoriously inconsistent illustrations in the source FASA ship recognition manual. As a result, these parts and sample ships are heavily based on the redraws found on Brad R. Torgersen's Star Trek Starship Tactical Combat Simulator On-Line Database & Archive. I consider this site the modern authority on FASA trek ships.

Notes on scaling and working with Blender

My target scale for all source files and output STL files is 1:1000. Although these files have not been extensively tested through printing, they are intended to be resized to match common modelling and miniatures scales.

Blender is free, which to be honest was the primary factor in my decision to learn it. There are many fine video and text tutorials available online if you're interested in learning more. See the Blender fundamentals tutorials playlist to get started.

You can use File -> Import -> Stl (.stl) and File -> Export -> Stl (.stl) to load or save STL files in blender.

Note: This kit was built using Blender 3.1.

Post-processing STL output

Although all of the STL files included have been tested as valid watertight meshes, joining the parts together and exporting new STL files can introduce small errors that may cause issues with slicing programs. I recommend any STL files you create are checked using a program like Netfabb Basic free edition. Doing a simple "Close All Holes" repair has fixed all of the issues I've run into so far. If you do run into issues with mesh quality, please let me know.
