Face Shield for COVID-19

#####This is the result of my search for the optimal 3D printed face shield. I wanted to help provide a design that can be mass produced to help fight the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

#####I've modified some existing designs and improved on several aspects. Credits to the original designer.

#####Please feel free to contact me directly via Facebook, I know many who visit Thingiverse doesn't have or are having difficulties creating accounts. I'll be glad to help out with printing and suggestions.

April 17, 2020 - Aegis 2 now available here:

##Instruction Manual

#####Please check out the instruction manual here:

###Aegis Face Shield Manual

#####Please note that this is editable, please download a copy and edit for localizing to your language

##Printing Notes

  • To achieve around 30 minutes print time I calibrated the design to be printed with these settings: 0.3 Layer Height, 0.8 Extrusion Width / Line Width (very important! 50% savings in print time), on a 0.4 Nozzle.

  • A 1KG roll of filament should produce around 35 Face Shields.

##Models Versions

  • +with-temples - has those ear part, a.k.a. temples like in eyeglasses
  • +thicc-base - no! not that kind of thicc, it just has more base layers for easier print with higher layer height
  • +forehead-support - has forehead support. more material used, but should be more comfortable.
  • +v1a - straight edges where frame contacts the face
  • +v1b - has very slightly more curved in forehead. smooth bevel where frame contacts the face. also is 5% wider to prevent pinching the forehead. it has cleaner models to prevent slicing errors.

I kinda rushed the version naming when I first released it. Also was thinking adding descriptions in filename makes it easier to understand and prevent mistaking versions during printing.

Release Notes

Very soon

  • Version 2, modified mounting system and other enhancements as per community feedback.

April 4 2020

  • Added aegis-faceshield-v1b.stl, aegis-faceshield-v1b-thicc-base.stl, aegis-faceshield-v1b-with-temple.stl, and aegis-faceshield-v1b-with-temple-thicc-base.stl.
  • This is an incremental improvement on previous v1a. Recommend to use v1b.
  • The v1b models have more rounded area in the forehead. Slightly beveled contacts on the face. And have reworked rubberband/elastic mount (slightly bigger hole, for non-temples only).
  • Fixed the non-manifold issue, although will not affect most slicers, this should prevent weird behavior during slicing.

April 3 2020

  • Added aegis-faceshield-v1b-forehead-support.stl and aegis-faceshield-v1b-thicc-base-forehead-support.stl.
  • Updated aegis-faceshield-v1a-with-temple-forehead-support.stl and aegis-faceshield-v1b-with-temple-thicc-base-forehead-support.stl.
  • Made the contact points on the forehead more curved. This should reduce the pressure build-up on forehead and would improve comfort.
  • The v1b models are slightly wider by around %5 and have slight beveling on contact areas.
  • It prints a little longer, around extra 4 mins with my settings. And uses around 3g more filament.
  • Added information from MikeLauderdale in rubber band sizes and filament consumption. Thanks!

April 1, 2020

  • Added aegis-faceshield-v1a-with-temple-forehead-support.stl and aegis-faceshield-v1b-with-temple-thicc-base-forehead-support.stl. Thank you MikeLauderdale for the feedback! This is a prototype, need community feedback on printability, size of the forehead support, and ergonomics. Sorry, my printer is ancient I can't fit it, but have simulated print in printing software.
  • Updated both aegis-faceshield-v1a-with-temple-forehead-support.stl and aegis-faceshield-v1b-with-temple-thicc-base-forehead-support.stl. Fixed some issues with the model, as well as reduced the height of the forehead. Added bevels on sides where face contacts with the frame.
  • Updated again aegis-faceshield-v1a-with-temple-forehead-support.stl and aegis-faceshield-v1b-with-temple-thicc-base-forehead-support.stl, noticed that it was fully enclosed at the bottom. Will not affect prints, but might as well fix it to prevent problems and for better preview.

March 30 2020

  • Added link for the printable Aegis Face Shield Manual in Google Docs. This manual was contributed by the Meg Villena, ‎Cecille Villena, Mr. Castillo, and others. Thank you for this very professional looking manual!

March 29 2020

  • Added Simplify3D & Cura settings. The Simplify3D Settings are for PLA using Flashforge Creator Pro.The Cura settings are for PLA using Ender. Thanks Mr. Manapat for the contribution. Please see bottom of Summary pictures. IMPORTANT: The Cura settings are currently for a 0.8 Nozzle only, for smaller nozzle like 0.4, you might need to lower the Layer height to 0.3. I'll gather more reference settings to help with the print.

March 29 2020

  • Uploaded hook-captive-v1a.stl. This is an improvement on original mask-hook-no-logo.stl.

March 28 2020

  • Uploaded aegis-faceshield-v1a-thicc-base.stl && aegis-faceshield-v1a-with-temple-thicc-base.stl used thicker layer for the hood. This design is calibrated for 0.6-0.8 layer height. For those with big nozzles like 0.6-0.8 ones, this will be easier to print.

March 25 2020

  • Uploaded aegis-faceshield-v1a.stl used thicker layer for the hood. Recommended version because first version aegis-faceshield.stl is demanding on bed adhesion and extrusion calibration. It might compromise safety of wearer due to gaps if printed incorrectly.
  • Added aegis-faceshield-with-v1a-with-temple.stl. The idea was contributed by Mr. Noel Pascual. My printer is small. Need volunteers to print it and give feedback! Edit: It works well! Several have printed and tested it! Thanks!

March 24 2020

  • Uploaded first version of face shield aegis-faceshield.stl and mask-hook-no-logo.stl for the hook

Objectives

  1. Low cost that can be made and given to medical front liners
  2. Fast printing, we need to be able to product a lot in a short amount of time
  3. Printable on a small 3D printer bed, need to leverage all available printers out there
  4. Easy to assemble and no post processing needed, time is valuable the faster we make the more lives potentially saved
  5. Comfortable for extended wear, our medical front liners are tired need to help them as much as we can

Changes to optimize printing:

  1. Fully enclosed the top to prevent droplets going into the eyes
  2. Modified the overall height a bit
  3. Removed forehead support to lower profile
  4. Shortened the temple (ear part) to allow printing in printers with small beds
  5. Removed center rib, less print movement
  6. Overall from original 22 grams to 15 grams in weight.
  7. Its a bit larger (but can easily be resized to accommodate those giants heads)

Changes based on community feedback:

  1. Made a temple version, one that has an ear portion, it makes it more secure and use 1 less rubberband. But at the cost of a little filament. This version will need larger print bed.
  2. Made a 'thicc' version for easier printing in bigger nozzles
  3. Revised the hook to ensure durability and rubberbands won't fall off

Features:

  1. Completely closed top to prevent droplets in the air entering the eyes.
  2. Semi flexible for comfortable fit
  3. Adjustable tension via back hook for comfort
  4. Very light weight (15 grams est. without Acetate)
  5. Modified thickness on certain parts from the original design to save on material cost and print time.

Materials for construction:

  • 1 pc Acetate Sheet (A4) or any plastic that is rigid
  • 2 pcs Rubber Bands / 1 pc for the temple version Size: #16 2 1/2 in x 1/16th or similar depending on tension desired
  • 1 3D Printed Face Shield Frame
  • 1 3D Printed Hook for Rubber Band (credits to LadyLiberty) / not required for the temple version

##Printing Tips

This can easily be printed, but since it uses interlocking parts and thin level layers I suggest printing on PLA for flexibility and avoid warping.

With my settings I can complete this in around 30 minutes. Each printer and slicer are different, you need to tweak to get your target print time.

Please perform some calibration before print, I can share my settings using Simplify 3D on a FFCP.

Other Important Settings using Simplify3D or other slicers:

####Layers

  • 0.30 - Layer Height
  • 2 - Top Solid Layer
  • 2 - Bottom Solid Layer
  • 1 - Outline / Perimeter Shells

####Speed

  • 70 mm/s - Default Printing Speed
  • 80 mm/s - X/Y Axis Movement Speed
  • 60% - Outline Underspeed
  • 80% - Infill Underspeed

####Extruder

  • 0.40 mm - Nozzle Diameter
  • 1.00 - Extrusion Multiplier
  • 0.80 - Extrusion Width - IMPORTANT!!! Makes printing 2x faster than 0.40!

P.S.

Fight hard against COVID-19!
