Description

360 division indexing wheel for marking a 360 degree scale on a work piece.
i made this to fit on the spindle of my 9" Hercus lathe (9"South bend, or Sheraton or Boxford: they are all equivalent South bend clones) with a 1 1/4" diameter spindle.
There are two rows of holes at 10 degree increments, offset from one another by 5 degrees.
Use one row of holes to mark the 10 degree marks.
Use the second row of holes to mark the 5 degree marks
The teeth on the periphery are in groups of four 1 degree increments

If you look at the photos, i mounted my work piece in the lathe, and used a 60 degree threading tool mounted sideways as the tool to make the markings.
To index the wheel, I mounted a block with a hole through it which i could move to align with the rows of holes or the peripheral teeth without altering the height of the block. My indexing pin was slightly tapered on one end to snugly engage the holes. On the opposite end I ground a flat chisel edge to index the teeth making sure the chisel edge was on centre of the pin. By doing this, I ensured that all indexing positions were at the same height/along the same line.
