Description

The Abeiran Gargoyle, due to its savage and fiendish appearance, has earned a reputation of malicious evil amongst many folk of Toril who meet them for the first time. This reputation is entirely unwarranted in many instances, for the Abeiran Gargoyle is a notably honor driven creature if one can gain its trust. This unfortunately is the main problem, for due to past interactions, including the murdering of several of their clans while in stonesleep, the Abeiran Gargoyle are loathe to trust outside forces. In particular, due to their being hunted down by dragons and their dragonborn forces, the Abeiran Gargoyles do not trust anything that appears remotely draconic, including those dragonborn who have freed themselves from their draconic overlords. Similarly, after having bad interactions with Karshimis' genasi forces, they do not trust many genasi either. However, they are known for having established relations with their much larger and less agile Abeiran rock troll cousins, goliaths, and several small dwarven freeholds.

Abeiran Gargoyles are odd in that they are by no means universal in appearance. In fact, they vary in size from size small to size large. They do all share the standards of having batlike wings, and typically they sprout shards of horn all over their body. Their skin is leathery, and often sports a stony texture to it. Most have horns on their heads, but this varies from thick, twisted "ram-like" horns to simple spikes of bone and even antlers like deer, antelope, and moose possess. Most possess a thick mane of hair, which they wear long down the back of their neck and even to the middles of their back. Their faces generally resemble humanoid faces, though some are known to posssess leonine or hawk-like features. They vary in skin tone from a russet red, varying degrees of gray, deep blues, browns, and even blacks. Their spikes/horns are typically a standard color of ivory, but sometimes take on other tones, including black. Their eyes are pupilless orbs of red, white, or yellow, and this coloration can change with their mood. Their teeth are sharp, and the fingers and toes end in rending claws. Their tails, while not prehensile, are still solid and whip-like and many have learned to use their tails to trip opponents who approach them from behind, and some even attach sharp implements on their tails to use them as unusual weapons.

Perhaps the most unusual feature of Abeiran Gargoyles is their fear of and weakness for radiant energy, which simulates sunlight. When exposed to natural sunlight, Abeiran Gargoyles slowly over several minutes petrify themselves until night returns (during this slow change, Abeiran Gargoyles are treated as slowed, but gain resistance to all damage). During this "stonesleep" Abeiran Gargoyles are known to heal all bodily damage incurred, with the exception of lost limbs or similarly ruined organs such as an eye (from a game perspective, they do not get hit dice like other PC's). However, while in this petrified state, they are vulnerable to attack. When exposed to radiant energy damage, this can kick off a temporary state of stonesleep lasting up to a minute, though it takes much damage to cause them to enter this state. While in stonesleep, Abeiran gargoyles not only have resistance to all damage, they also ignore the first five points of any piercing, slashing, bludgeoning, radiant, fire, cold, poison, or lightning damage.

While most Abeiran Gargoyles remain in Abeir, at least one large clan has transferred to Toril in the Shaaran city mountain on canyon walls flaking the River Shaar. This city, mainly known as the Cliffside City of Peleverai or "Returned Peleverai", is dotted with Abeiran Gargoyles who allied with the Torilians who fled to and rebuilt this ruined city over the past century, and who have only recently returned to Toril.
