Ender 5 Plus external case

*edits: I found out the SKR USB holes didn't line up and fixed mid body left. I realized Fusion very helpfully merged the whole bottom section when I rounded a corner, so I fixed it back to 2 parts. THis will mess-up the inserts for the left side. I'm going to get my skr mounted and then post an update for those and any mounting lugs that are still fowled up.

I wanted an external electronics case, buuut I still have the original electronics, buuuut also my printer lives in a filthy garage (and is enclosed), buuuut it also has a Meanwell 600W, buuut also I sit next to this clamorous machine during the workday now (thanks COVID), buuuuut also I hate the utter lack of cable management from Creality, buuuuut also I have tools and crap everywhere for this damn thing.

So, I made a little chest-o-drawers thang to stash it all. Ultimately, I designed it from the ground up, but I tried remixing and stealing first, so the list of users with the really good-ideas I scavenged from is below.

I used a 120mm fan and joined the cult of Noctua. I made an air filter out of the cheapest green scrubby I could find on Amazon. I added mount lugs for Creality and SKR that might even fit (mine did not, so I snapped them off after the first printing and glued them; I wasn’t reprinting. I think it’s fixed). I haven’t tried the SKR lugs yet.

The case has a lip at the back to hold up plexiglass. Doing it this way I used 24”x48” plexi for the wall and door. I used fiberboard for the other two walls. The vents exhaust into the printer’s cube, because it’s as good a place as any to dump heat.

I attached the angle brackets separately with ABS glue, but they could just as well be printed as one with the top or bottom section.

Now I need to somehow quiet down that Meanwell. That plus an SKR for the steppers, and I won’t lose quite as much hearing before going back to my office in the year, I dunno, 2025 maybe?

Printing: I meant to do the bottom and middle in ABS. I did the top in ASA.

• When I printed the bottom, I used ASA, which warped like a dog. I was low on filament, so I plastered it with ABS paste. Then I realized the fan didn’t quite fit, so I made a spacer. I’ve included the spacer in case you find yourself similarly situated, other than putting it in there, nothing really changes. You shouldn’t need it IF everything prints perfectly, Jupiter is in retrograde during the age of Aquarius, and you have a winning lottery ticket; for the rest of us, the spacer gives a little fudge factor.
