IMPORTANT
I have made an optimized model of this available here : https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/tool/yarn-winder-with-bevel-gears
This optimized model also have a yarn guide where the yarn can inserted/extracted frond the side, no need to pass it trough, really good if you need to extract it in the middle of a run.
You can still use the free model but the spool gears are not bevel and will fail in the long run, not fun in the middle of a run! Of course you can reprint and change them, or you could use the optimized model...
This is a remix from https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2216197.
This winder can be used with this yarn swift : https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4558303
I have made some small change for the 1st gear to support double bearings in sandwich...
I have updated the yarn guide with multiple holes to have some options...
I used some hardware to build this:
Screws lengths required may differ according with the base thickness and washers used, I have made some countersink from under to reduce my base thickness and hide nuts...
M6 and M4 washers should be used to shim the bearings from base plate, spindle base and between small gear and 3rd gear because they only touch the inner bearings rings and let them free to spin.
Nylon hex nuts are needed because you cannot press the bearings to hard because they won’t roll... Bearings spacers sandwiched between two bearings (gear 1, carriage arm, gear 3, crank handle) help in a way that inner bearing cores are squeezed together against the spacer. That way you could tight those bolts (not too much) without worrying.
There is some tweaking to do with M6 washers to get the small gear to fit with the spindle gear. I have use 3 M6 washer and it works for me... bevel gears would had been perfect, but I don't have the drawing module to make them. So if someone is up to it, it would be a nice upgrade...
You may have to glue the spindle to the spindle base when you're happy with your assembly.
2020-08-30 update : 2nd gear have been modified with a more symmetrical and aesthetic model.
