Description

This is a wireframe head of a deer, inspired by various wireframe sculptures, mostly the one from Dotsan.

The model is rather hard to print if you don't want to have 10 times more plastic in supports than in the model itself. To try to reduce the amount of supports, I've designed custom supports, which are in file "p3" (for which I've enabled "Print as support" in per-model settings in Cura). They worked for me, though they are not perfect. Or just enable automatic supports. Experimental features like tree supports might be good for this model, but I had no success with them.

Regardless of supports, the bottom surface area is tiny, so brims or rafts are better be enabled.

The model is split into 3 parts, each of them fits inside a regular 20x20x20 3D printer. You can even scale it a bit more.

Files:

  • p1 head itself
  • p2a antler 1
  • p2b antler 2
  • p3 is an attempt to manually design supports that don't take a day to print.

Yes, all required files are here on thingiverse, the site just does not render the previews for some reason.

I've glued the parts with epoxy and superglue. After that I did some finishing with dremel and sanding paper, and painted it. Since it's hanging on a wall, 3D printing imperfections (layers, sagging) are not visible at all.

Update 13.12.2020

I've uploaded .3mf file for Cura 3.6.0 for a model with custom supports (p1+p3), with printing time of 8.5 hours. gcode file is also provided.
