Description

A podstakannik (Russian: подстака́нник, literally "thing under the glass") is a type of tea holder popular throughout Eastern Europe, the former USSR, and other former Communist bloc areas. It is an iconic part of Russian tea culture, and can be seen in many movies, including The Hunt for Red October. Its initial function was to allow drinkers to hold glasses full of hot tea without burning their hands. Of course, 3D printable plastics have a glass point too low to allow for this without melting the plastic. However, there's nothing saying that such a thing could not be made to hold cold beverages.

There's really little practical use for this object. I guess it could be used as a sort of can cozy or something, if you really want. It's sized to fit cans used for HiBall Energy, and my favorite is peach, thus the motif; but you can theoretically use this for anything as long as it's the size of a standard US beverage can. Coke, Dr Pepper, Monster, Beer; all will probably work with this.

I'm still tweaking this, so the size may be off. I'm printing the prototype as I type this, and my PLA is old. My printer is slow. Thus, it'll take me a bit of time to update this with my impressions of it. If you can get this made up faster than I can, I'd be eager to hear your thoughts on this design.

As a special warning, PLA and 3D printed objects aren't generally considered food safe, as it's difficult to clean the layered latticework that comprises these objects. Therefore, it is ill advised to use this object itself as a beverage container. It should ONLY be used to hold cans.

With all that said, enjoy! Na Zdorovie!
