Would you like to use Ikea Trådfri solution for switching/dimming your lights, but you do not want to put Ikeas switches on the wall next to your regular switchers/dimmers? With this project, you have the option to integrate the Ikea On/Off Dimmer into a regular Elko (RS16)/Elko plus design frame that matches your other switches.
You need:
- Ikea On/Off dimmer
- Elko wall switch
- 3D printed parts
Procedure:
- Disassemble the Ikea On/Off dimmer to retrieve the printed circuit board
- Disassemble the Elko wall switch. You are going to reuse the metal frame only (of course in addition to the visible frame and button parts)
- 3D printed parts: The top and the bottom part is best printed standing up on support. Carefully remove all the support material, making sure you do not break anything. Make sure you do not leave any support material.
Assembly:
- Put the two buttons into the top part (the top side is up-side down), put the pairing button into the bottom part. Then place the pcb onto the bottom part and join the two parts together while holding the pcb in place.
- Insert a battery and the battery lock, and test that all the buttons are working nicely.
- Install the dimmer button onto the hinges. Test that the button moves freely, and that there is a slight clearance to the buttons.
- Put the dimmer into the metal frame and add the frame and button (if you are using an regular Elko frame, you will need to cut away part of the plastic inside the frame that covers the buttons. This should not be necessary on Elko Plus frames).
You are now ready to install in your wall box
Ikea claims that battery should last around 2 years. To extend battery life, you can opt for soldering wires to the pcb, and add a pack of 2xAAA batteries and put behind the switch. Batteries might last up to 10 years without having to replace the battery.
