Description

I designed this simple filament spool rack to mount high up on my wall above the doors so I could have some out-of-the-way storage for spools.

Ingredients:

  • Print: Brackets, qty 2+ (about one for every 3' of tube)
  • Print: For each end that isn't against a wall, qty 1
  • Print: For each end that is against a wall, qty 2
  • Buy: 2x lengths of 1/2" EMT rigid conduit, length of your choice - sells for $5 for 10ft at a home store
  • Buy: Tube cutter or other means to cut tube to length
  • Buy: #10 pan head wood screws (with drywall anchors if not going into a stud)
  • Buy: Some 5mm zipties
  • Buy: 2x M3x8mm screws per endstop

Instructions:

  1. Measure and attach brackets to the wall. If you put them to either side of a door, you're guaranteed to hit a stud. Otherwise, use a stud finder or drywall anchors (noting the weight limit if you use anchors).
  2. Cut tube to length. I don't recommend an unsupported stick-out of more than a few inches.
  3. For tube ends against a wall, print and insert two plugs to avoid the tube scraping up the wall during install.
  4. Lay the tube into the brackets.
  5. For tube ends not against a wall, print and install the end stop. Thread in two M3x8mm screws from the bottom to lock it against the tube.
  6. Run 5mm zip ties through the zip tie channels in the bracket so that the tube is held securely into the bracket. Tighten, and cut zip ties flush.

That's it. Enjoy your low-cost filament rack.
