Description

AtomStack offers a decent PWM-controlled diode laser module. I created this adapter so it can be mounted on my OX CNC rig. This design also provides for strain relief for the wires.

This is the current design I'm using, There is also the original design which did not have the tab extension. The eyeguard is a nice feature and actually does its job well, it's still advisable to use additional protection like dark red welding curtain as these 545-nm diode lasers can produce a lot of harm to the eyes which is not evident at first.

As far as the laser module itself, I wanted to include some additional details here. The connector is a 3-position JST-XHP connector (2.54mm pitch). I'm controlling it with a board running Smoothieware (the MKS-SBASE) and have the board set to use 3.3V TTL levels, which works just fine. The default Smoothieware PWM laser control settings worked without modification. Also note that although the L40 is advertised as a 40W laser, that's marketing hype - it's a 5W diode laser but is packaged with good electronics and optics that give an exceptionally tight square spot beam. Most diode lasers give you a rectangular beam, this actually gets down to a square spot.

I printed this in PETG but it could easily be done in PLA. I've just had high humidity this year which has given me environmental trouble printing in PLA. Also now that I've gotten PETG dialed in (higher nozzle temps needed) I prefer the additional strength for parts like this.
