Voltaic Pile - The World's First Battery

The Voltaic Pile was the first battery known to be able to sustain an electric charge. It was created in the late 1700's / early 1800's by Alessandro Volta. Voltaic Piles are surprisingly easy to make, and they can create enough voltage to power small electronics, like LEDs.
