Description
Rain barrels are great but can be a liability when they overflow during a heavy downpour defeating the purpose of a downspout to keep water away from the foundation. Most, if not all rain barrels can't handle heavy rain when full due to smaller overflow ports. I have a downspout from a two story house and before I added this system the rain barrel would be bubbling and boiling out of the top when full. I first tried a larger overflow, but I what I found out I needed a system to divert this flow when the rain barrel was full. This system allows rain into the rain barrel until full, then diverts most of the rain into a second downspout. I used a 1 liter water bottle with a 74mm diameter (I used Smart Water brand) as the float glued into the piece named barrelfloat.stl. I used a 1/2inch aluminum tube to connect the float to the flapper bolt cut to length to activate the flapper when the water reached the overflow height. The small flat stock at the flapper rod is 1/2 in X 1/16. My design uses an aluminum flapper however I uploaded a 3D printable one as well (I have not used it so LMK). The system works great and when the flapper diverts the water when the barrel is full most of the water from the downspout exits from the diverter keeping the barrel from boiling over. The black and green pieces in the picture are the same print (down3divert.stl) and all bolts are stainless. The flapper should move freely so you may need to clean/sand the print of any edges or crap where the flapper rod sits. I also added a bit of waterproof grease to the flapper rod. The print "flap2" has a reinforced bolt hole. Here is a video to support this build: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpxWYqXs4eU
