Description

What was originally supposed to be a quick modification of an existing case turned into a few hours long new design from scratch with improvements!

The case was designed with the following goals:

  • printable with minimal supports
    • only use tree supports touching buildplate for the hole bridges (or venture without supports if your printer is capable of long bridges) and normal supports for the ribbon cover if used
  • no additional hardware required for assembly: the pieces snap together without screws
    • screws are required if you are using a fan. Two variations are included: 40mm and 30mm
    • the lid can be better secured with screws if you are using 16mm M2.5 hex standoffs to secure the Pi to the TFT (but longer screws than the included ones are needed, around 5mm)
    • include slots to allow prying apart the TFT frame if need be
  • holes for all the connectors, including GPIO, DSI and CSI and LEDs with minimal gaps
  • easily customizable
    • Fusion 360 file included (f3z) with (subjectively) clean timeline to allow modifications (remove artwork, holes, change fan size, add custom mounting options, etc)
    • (hopefully more variations included as stl when time allows)
  • awesome looking, of course

Things to note:

  • you may struggle a bit to insert the Pi into the case due to tight tolerances. I managed to do it rather easily by detaching the Pi from the TFT and screwing it back after inserting it into the frame.
  • the SD card may be difficult to insert / take out, especially after the display ribbon is connected. Tweezers are pretty much required.
  • the snap fit hooks of the lid may be fragile, I did not test how much abuse they can take, but I had no problem closing and opening it multiple times.
  • I have not designed any mounting options yet, as I intend to use the case as it is. I am open to suggestions for universal mounting options and, when I have more time, I may implement them.
