Description

This is a control and monitoring panel I designed for my DIY well pump battery backup system (video below). It is made to house a shunt-based battery monitor, an AC power meter for the inverter's output, and a switch to turn it on (links at bottom). This can be very useful for any DIY battery backup or solar generator system, and is one of many variations of control panels I've come up with for these types of projects.

Not only does this make a system easier to use and understand, it also allows you remotely monitor your system from a more convenient, visible location. The battery monitor comes with an 8m cable (connects to shunt) and the rest of the cable lengths are up to you! The on/off switch should in theory work with almost any inverter, since the vast majority of them are controlled by a simple switch that you can just tap into.

Oh, and the faceplate mounts to the case using 16mm (or shorter) M3 bolts. They should tap themselves in tightly if the dimensions are correct. They do hold quite well but they won't last for more than a few cycles of screw/unscrew, so keep that to a minimum.

You can find plenty of examples of DIY battery banks and solar generators online, many of them considerably cheaper than anything pre-built. But the biggest issue with so many of the DIY examples is how difficult they would be to understand for anyone other than the creator. I see this as completely unacceptable, and I believe that properly implemented additions like this one can transform a system into something reasonable and usable. Maybe even elegant.

Hope you find this useful! Thanks for looking!

P.S. I also drilled a hole to house a barrel jack for battery charging. The hole does not exist in the model, though I may modify it if I build any more of these systems.
