Description

This design follows the approach used by Mitutoyo for their 156-105-10 stand. Their base is narrow and uses the weight of the steel part to keep it stable.

I started with their approach, but the light weight plastic would tip over to one side. I kept adjusting until it was stable. Now the model works great.

There was a similar model on thingiverse that matched the Mitutoyo part. They marked their stand with a license of no derivatives. I thought this was strange given they were already copying someone else's design.

So here is a question for all. If a 3D model posted online is a copy of a commercial part, do they get to have exclusive rights to the design they post by asking for no derivatives? Copy right is for creative works, functional designs have less protection. That is why companies mostly rely on patents for protection. It is certainly an area that has fuzzy boundaries. What's your opinion?

At least my design is now somewhat unique, and solves a different problem by being a design for light weight plastic materials. The 3D model is my “creative work” but the functional design is not mine.

You will need a ¼"-20 x 1-½" bolt with a hex head, and a ¼"-20 nut. I listed two different knobs. Either should work. It is a matter of preference which you use.

If someone wants, I could try updating with a 6mm bolt and nut. Post a comment.
