Description

This was my answer to the lack of good pocket on Star Wars costumes. I wore this little guy around GalaxyCon last weekend and had enough people ask where I got it that I figured I should share the files. The gonk is a little over a foot tall with the legs. It's got a place to slide a battery operated tea light into the head, so that you can light up the buttons on its face. Both of the knobs turn and the legs swing as you walk.

Printing Recommendations:

  • "Simple Key" is pretty fragile. If you can print it so that the knob is perpendicular to the bed, that will make the blade of the key stronger in the direction that it will experience the most loads. I would print this piece solid.
  • The knob in the face greeblies is meant to turn. You may have to use 2 pairs of pliers to twist the base and the knob in opposite directions to break the tiny supports your printer will put inside the knob.

Purchased Parts:

  • 1/2" diameter PVC pipe. This is used for the legs you need less than 12 inches.
  • Pop Tubes. These go over the PVC legs. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08XXHJ3SR?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title). I recommend painting them with plastidip. It sticks decently well and gives a nice texture.
  • Bike spoke/dowel/skewer. This is used as the axle that the legs hang on. You'll probably need to cut whatever you use to length (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X8M3MT5?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title)
  • Hinge and associated screws (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MR2P5QN?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title)
  • 3/4" nylon webbing
  • Small battery operated tea light. Remote control ones are especially nice

Assembly:
0) I recommend sanding and painting (if you plant o do those 2 things) before you assemble the gonk

  1. Glue the top of the feet to the bottom of the feet
  2. Glue the greeblies to the "bottom" half of the gonk. The vent goes inside the gonk.
  3. Glue the side greeblies to the side of the gonk "lid" (top half of the gonk)
  4. Attach the face greeblies to the face plate. You can use 3D printed buttons. If you want the buttons to be translucent, you can use the 3D printed buttons as a master, press them into playdough, pull them out, and use the impression as a mold for UV resin. They won't be perfect, but I liked the way the imperfections looked with the weathered gonk droid.
  5. Glue the face plate to the light holder and then glue that subassebly to the "window" in the top half of the gonk (the "lid"). The face plate should be inset from the outside of the gonk.
  6. Glue the "middle ring" to the "lid" (top half of the gonk body). The ring should hang past the bottom edge of the top half of the body. This way it covers the seam between the 2 halves of the gonk body.
  7. Drill holes in both the "lid" and "bottom" of the gonk body to fit your hinges
  8. Drill holes in your PVC pipe to run the axle through
  9. Thread the PVC legs on the axle and lower them through the holes in the bottom of the gonk body. There are u shaped protrusions on the lower half of the gonk. The axle sits in these. I added hot glue to keep them in place. I wanted something I could remove if I needed to. For a more permanent solution you can glue the "swinging leg retainer" to the protrusions (turning a U into a O). You'll probably have to break the axle if you ever need to take off the legs/feet if you do this.
  10. Thread a chunk of pop tube onto the pvc legs. You don't want this to take up the whole length of the leg between the feet and the body or the legs won't swing.
  11. Glue the feet to the PVC legs.
  12. Assemble the top and bottom halves of the gonk using the hinge hardware
  13. Slide a battery operated teal light into the light holder
  14. Lock the gonk closed with the "simple key." It looks like a turn knob when installed
  15. Use the webbing to give your gonk a handle
  16. Glue on the antenna
You can see the leg assembly in this video: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C-h2xJfuhdt/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

I'd love to see pictures if you make your own little gonk friend!
