DooM Guy (Thing 3404164 by Dragon2781) switch extension

I'm not sure if this is considered a remix, but this part is designed to be used with Thing 3404164: DooM Guy - Collectable Figure (DooM 2016) by Dragon2781

Why I made this:

I printed all parts and was looking for switches in my collection of electronic parts, but a switch with the required length was hard to find. I also did not have the 2032 connector at hand, so I printed this model by NotSoSolid.

To avoid ordering switches I might not use again, I made an extension for a shorter switch instead.

Desoldering:

This extension is designed for one of the ISD1820 switches but will fit most short tactile switches. If you already have a switch approximately the same length as one of the switches on the board, you can skip this step.

To use one of these switches, you need to desolder it. I desoldered all unused switches since they would otherwise go to waste. Important: Record your audio on the ISD1820 board before desoldering.

1. Heat the first pin: Apply heat to any pin from the back of the board using a soldering iron.
2. Pry gently: While heating, use a small screwdriver to lift one side of the switch slightly.
3. Repeat for other pins: Continue this process for all pins until you can fit the screwdriver underneath the switch.
4. Remove the switch: Desolder the remaining two pins, and the switch will fall off.

⚠️ The switches can withstand some heat, but avoid prolonged contact. (You can try again two more times, though. 😉)

Resoldering with wires:

1. Measure two wires to at least the length of the board and the switch. You can place the board inside the head and measure accordingly to get an approximate length, but I recommend using longer wires anyway for easier assembly.
2. Solder the wires onto the ISD1820, connecting them to the pads of the middle switch position. Ensure you solder one wire to a top position and the other to a bottom position.
3. Solder the wires to the switch, making sure the wires are connected to one side where the pins come out of the switch.

Note: I initially measured the wires to the exact length, but longer wires will make assembly much easier. I recommend adding longer (>10 cm) wires and pushing the excess length through the head joint when putting the back on. This extra length allows you to separate the head and body, making battery replacement significantly easier.

Finishing up:

Finishing Up

1. Insert the switch extension from the back into the front body.
2. Position the switch on top of the extension.
3. Use hot glue to secure the switch in place. Apply glue only on the sides and back to ensure the switch can still be pressed.
4. Once ready for full assembly, push all excess wire through the head joint prior to screwing the back on.
