Description

This design is a combination of two grafting tools, the Grafting Knife design (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:729571) by christianegholm (https://www.thingiverse.com/christianegholm) and the Whip and Tongue grafting tool (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6928800) by me (https://www.thingiverse.com/hankr) This tool allows you to make the 15 degree cut and the 'tongue' cut used in Whip and Tongue grafting (https://ptes.org/campaigns/traditional-orchard-project/orchard-practical-guides/grafting/whip-and-tongue-graft/) quickly and easily using one tool. This tool uses two Stanley 1992 (or equivalent) utility blades. (https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-11-921A-Classic-Blades-Dispenser/dp/B0006HVTSO) Tool Setup: Carefully insert one utility blade into the slot in the tool and press the blade all of the way in using the push stick. To replace a dull blade, remove the blade by pushing it in the opposite direction with the push stick until it can be grasped with pliers and pulled out. Be extremely careful when handling the blade and keep the cap snapped on the tool when not in use. See Whip and Tongue Grafting Tool (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6928800) for more information. Carefully place the top (narrow side) of the second utility blade into the slot located inside the top of the blade holder using pliers and press it into the slot. Place the blade holder onto the cutting base and press it down to fully seat the blade. Keep the blade holder securely on the cutting base when not in use. See Grafting Knife design (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:729571) by christianegholm (https://www.thingiverse.com/christianegholm) for more information. How to use: Place the branch to be grafted into the slot on the cutting base (Image001.) Place the blade holder onto the cutting base and press down fully to make the cut (Image002.) Repeat for the second piece to be grafted. Select the appropriate cutting hole to use by comparing the branch with the indents next to each cutting hole. Place the branch into the cutting hole with the bark side of the cut against the side of the hole next to the indent and the cut side aligned against the blade (Image003.) Press the branch down on the blade until the top of the cut is even with the top of the hole (Image004.) A slot will be cut into the branch (Image005.) Repeat for the second piece to be grafted. Slide the two pieces toghther so that the slots interlock (Image006) and continue pressing until the bark layer is aligned (Image007.) Complete the graft by wrapping the grafted area with grafting tape. See the website at the top of this document for more information on the Whip and Tongue grafting technique. Printing: I printed this tool on a Creality Ender-3 V3 KE using generic PLA filament and the default 0.20mm Standard settings in Creality Print 6.0. No supports are necessary, however you may want to add a brim to the Push Stick part if there are adhesion problems.
