Filament Spool Holder with Ball Bearing Spindle and Adjustable Spool Tension

February 21, 2025
Description
This design is for a filament spool holder that will hold most standard 1kg filament spools. The spool holder features a ball bearing spool spindle, adjustable spool tension and an optional camera mount. The spindle requires two 8mm x 22mm x 7mm 608 ball bearings. This design is based on the Ball Bearing Spool Stand design (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4076177) by ArtieH (https://www.thingiverse.com/ArtieH). I used this spool holder along with the Ender-3 V3 KE Filament Guide (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6955181) to relocate the filament spool from the top frame of my printer to the table beside the printer.
Printing:
I printed this filament guide on a Creality Ender-3 V3 KE using generic PLA filament and the default 0.20mm Standard settings in Creality Print 6.0.
Supports are necessary for printing the spindle body. I printed the spindle body standing upright with the short end of the axle on the build plate. In Creality Print 6.0 I used Support Type: Normal(manual) Style: Grid. I included a slightly raised ring on the spindle body flange to make using the Fill tool in Support Painting easy. It may also be necessary to slow your printing speed if you experience adhesion problems with the spindle body.
Assembly:
Filament Stand:
The pieces of the filament stand should simply snap together. Depending on the quality of the print, minimal adjustments with a hobby knife may be needed to achieve a tight fit. The fit between the pieces should be secure enough to hold the stand together but you may want to use Cyanoacrylate glue for additional stability.
Spindle:
I found it useful to chase the threads (standard M8 threads) of the threaded end of the spindle axle and the inner and outer axle nuts before assembly.
Press a bearing onto each end of the spindle axle until fully seated. Put the filament spool onto the spindle body and then slide the spindle cone onto the spindle body to center the spool. Screw the spindle nut onto the spindle body and tighten it to hold everything in place. In this order, put the inner axle washer, outer axle washer, inner axle nut and outer axle nut onto the threaded end of the spindle axle.
Place the assembled spool/spindle onto the filament stand with the bearings fully seated in the cutouts at the top of the stand. The tension on the spool (how easily the filament unwinds) can be adjusted by tightening/loosening the inner axle nut against the inner/outer axle washers which act as a brake against the side of the stand. When the desired spool tension is reached, tighten the outer axle nut against the inner axle nut to lock it in place.
