Description
I finally received my Extra Toppings box, deluxe miniatures and Bruce Lee vs Muhammad Ali sets. The Bruce Lee and Muhammad Ali boxes are now posted and there is nothing special needed for them. However, for the Extra Toppings and TMNT box in general, I really wanted to make it into a complete storage solution. I believe I now have that completed. So if you own EVERYTHING TMNT, you can now store it all in the TMNT box plus some extra game boards from other sets, if you have them.
The Extra Toppings minis for the turtles are standalone boxes that fit the alt mini plus the side kick mini. For the minion miniatures I opted for a single box that stores all of them. It is a bit compact, but everything should fit with only a tiny bit of Tetris-skill. If you prefer them to be stored like the other minis, let me know and I will consider making alternative storage but know that they will NOT fit in the box then. Additionally, I added two new card spacers to fill the somewhat awkward gaps left behind. These can be used to store extra/promo cards however you wish or just as spacers. Finally, to make the box work for vertical storage, there are now two trays that sit in the top that are sized to fit several half size maps plus the TMNT map on the top. If you do not have a big enough printer to print these, slice them in half and it should still work fine, it will just require removal in multiple parts.
Please see my images for more details on how it all fits
Unmatched is a very cool game system with amazing components, but also, a lot of boxes requiring a lot of space. As my collection grew I kept looking for a more compact storage solution that satisfied a set of criteria I was looking for:
While there are a lot of great options out there that people have posted, most of them are either rather large and require a ton of filament or are not modular enough to support people that may own only a handful of different expansions. After some thought, measuring and trial and error, I came up with a system that I think checks off all of the boxes of what I was hoping for.
First off, I came up with a set of measurements that allows for a single, larger box (battle of legends, buffy, cobble and fog, etc...) to store 12 characters with all of their components (making exceptions for a few of the larger models, like T-Rex, which are still accounted for here). You can think of the boxes as being split into a grid of 3x4 spaces where most characters take up a single space. From there I wanted to ensure each character box had a similar design but could account for the unique measurements that almost all characters have. Originally I went for a more modular design that could fit multiple characters, but pretty much nothing in this game shares the same measurements from one character to another so the final design ended up being a specific box for each character. Thankfully, the structure of these is still largely uniform, so it typically just requires some minor adjustments to correctly fit the dials and cert, larger miniatures.
The larger characters (T-Rex, Raptors, etc..) are also accounted for within the same measurements by taking up the space of 2-4 of the individual character boxes. This means they still fit perfectly within the boxes, but does reduce the number of characters you can place into a single box. You will need to store the map boards in separate boxes unless you want lid lift. I just use a couple of the thinner boxes (from the Witcher sets) for the larger boards and the T-Rex box for the smaller maps and all of the rule books. Even with (nearly) everything released so far, there is still room in those boxes for more maps.
I do also own the Unmatched Adventures set and used the same grid system to make use of the larger box it came with. The boxes cover the boss characters and supports the fan created decks that allow you to play with them, if you have printed those. Additionally, each minion has their own smaller box that can be used to hold their components and collectively these take up 2 normal character slots when all printed. I also incorporated token slots into a special card holder for the adventures cards to hold the Marvel location tokens, if you own those sets.
I know one big question will be "do these support sleeves?" and the answer is... yes! You can see if my photos that I do sleeve my cards, but I am using perfect fit Sleeve King sleeves (the standard ones, not the super thick ones). Other sleeves should work in most cases, but the margins are VERY tight, so if you are worried about a specific type of sleeve check the comments section here as others have already posted about which sleeves they use. So far I haven't heard of any sleeves that do not fit, but some may be extra tight.
Please feel free to remix these as much as you want. I am very happy with how this project turned out and I hope others can get some use out of it as well. Thanks for taking the time to look at this design and read my wall of text :)
I very much intend for this to always be a free project that others can share and extend. To that end, I have links to all of my files publicly available on Tinkercard. Please feel free to use these to make your owner designs, tweaks or translations. All I ask is that you consider posting those designs for the community and linking them here so others can find them.
I have gone back through every single model in this collection and reworked things to be in line with the new spacing that was used in the TMNT set. At the bottom of this page there is a change log where I list the most notable changes. I do want to stress that if you already printed the original files, there really is no reason to go back and print these new ones. Most changes are extremely minor and if your printer did well with the old files, these new ones won't be worth the filament. The only exception possibly being the Ancient Lesher for those who had trouble fitting their model into the origin box. Thanks for all the kind words and support on this project and I hope you enjoy the new and improved character boxes going forward!
The following is a list of the changes I made to the original boxes of each character broken down by set.
