Description
I made a toy for my cats that was simply a box with some holes cut in it and some ping pong balls inside. I cut the holes just the right size so they could get their arms in and slap the ping pong balls around, but they wouldn't fit out through the holes. All of my cats loved this and they all played with it so much that the holes started to let ping pong balls out. So I designed this two piece port to reinforce the holes. It's working great so far and they are glad to have their favorite toy back.
I just thought I would share it with the community in case anybody would like to try it out. Feel free to use or modify how you like, this was just something I whipped up in Blender.
After printing, you may want to take the bulkhead and nut and thread them together a few times, working them back and forth until the nut screws on easily. I wanted to keep the thread tolerance fairly close for this print because I didn't want anything coming loose later on.
Assembly is easy, find a box that suits your needs, I ended up using a bark box this time because my dog has no interest in them once he has gotten the treats that they came with and this is about the same size as the other box I was using. Just place down the nut where you want to install a port and trace around the inside of it. Cut the holes out with whatever is suitable. I used scissors, but it was much easier with a serrated knife. The holes don't have to be perfect, you just need to be able to get the threads through, then screw the nut on inside the box, add in a couple of ping pong balls, or whatever spherical cat toys yours prefer and it's done.
I'm currently printing a bunch of these because I want each side of the box to have at least one hole. Generally when one cat starts playing with the box, somebody else wants to check it out too.
Sorry I didn't bother to come up with a more clever name, it is what it is. Happy printing!
