Home Depot recently started selling miniature versions of their big storage bins (https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-6-5-Qt-Tough-Storage-Tote-in-Black-with-Yellow-Lid-999-6QT-HDX/332895815)
To a droid enthusiast this instantly looked like a mini gonk droid!
So, I have started modeling parts to convert it.
This is a WIP, so instructions are lame and more bits will be added. The key things to note are:
- There are 2 connector pieces. These drop into the slots at the ends of the bins, and keep the top and bottom aligned. I glue them in the bottom and let the top open up.
- The face is, well, the face. That should go on one end of one bin.
- The parts labeled "endplate" go on the short sides of the bins, in the center.
- The parts labeled "panel" go on the long sides of the bins, in the center.
- The parts labeled "smallpanel" go on the long sides on the left and right of the center groove.
- The legs have 2 screw holes for extra strength when attaching them. I used m5
- I used high temp hot glue for assembling everything. it seems to hold well.
Use some parts. Use all of them. Rearrange things. Print in color. Do whatever makes you happy :)
FYI: Bambu matte charcoal filament matches the bins perfectly.
Edit June 7:
- Added a skirt to hide the seam between the bins.
- For the skirt, you'll need to print 2 of the long pieces, 2 of the short pieces, and 8 total corner pieces.
- The corners are designed to print easily without support. You'll need to glue 2 of them back-to-back to form a single corner.
- I recommend printing all the skirt pieces and assembling the corners before attaching anything to the bins.
- The long pieces and corners are not meant to touch. There should be a little gap between them. This is both aesthetic and allows for slight variances in printer calibration.
- I know these instructions aren't great -- look at my instagram for pics :)
