Description
I picked up a mini-toolbox at Harbor Freight to hold my misc. 3D printing tools and another one for my shop to help organize my junk drawer. The biggest issue is that the two drawers don't extend all the way so anything in the back ~1/3 of the top drawer is difficult to access.
I designed some organization boxes that slip into the drawer and have a "handle" that slips over the side of the drawer which can be used to easily remove the box for easy access to the contents. Note that there are left and right versions for the top drawer. I also discovered that some of the older tool boxes have metal tabs protruding inside the drawer where the rails are connected. The newer versions do not have this. You will need to use the versions "with holes" for the older design toolbox so that the organizer boxes sit tight against the wall.
I've also included a simple box for the top tray that is sized to the max height while still allowing the top to close. On the Top tray, note that there is a ~8mm lip around the lid so this tray needs to be at least 7mm from all edges. I know this is WAY more info than you need for a simple box. Update: 12/20/2026 - I added a box that has 8.2mm spacers on 3 sides to keep the box away from the edges. Just snip off the feet on the end away from the lid... or don't, they are only 1mm thick.
Finally, supporting my junk drawer application, there is a AA & AAA battery organizer tray for the bottom drawer (for the right side). The handle and base are strong enough to be able to remove the fully loaded organizer by the handle.
All boxes are designed to work sitting on top of the included drawer liner. If used with the Kobalt mini-toolbox or without the drawer liner, you may need to stretch the z-axis by 1.5 or 2mm. There is plenty of clearance room above the drawer side, but if you get it too tall the handle can't be used to maintain the insert location against the drawer wall.
I've included Fusion 360 design files for all boxes to allow for easier customization.
