MyCloud Cooling Base – Custom 80mm Fan Mount

Summary:
WD MyCloud is a great entry-level NAS, but the stock cooling is poor. I had previously placed a fan and shroud on top, but lifting the unit for better airflow made it tall and awkward-looking. After seeing other designs that were either oversized or didn’t fit well, I decided to create my own.

This base holds an 80mm USB-powered fan underneath and improves airflow while keeping the unit stable and visually balanced. I modeled vent patterns to match the stock top vents and added foot mounts for extra grip or compatibility with rubber fan feet.

I’m using it with the AC INFINITY USB fan with speed control, and it’s working great.

Features

  • Fits standard 80mm fan
  • Notch in back for USB cable routing
  • Foot mounts to use stick-on pads or rubber feet from typical USB fans
  • Original NAS feet remain installed
  • Vent holes on the side mimic original top design for aesthetic consistency

Printing Tips

  • Print Time: ~17 hours
  • Layer Height: 0.2 mm
  • Walls: 3
  • Infill: 12%
  • Supports: Tree support recommended (block side vent holes; support only rear vent and fan mounts)
  • Seam: Rotate 180° in CURA to hide the seam on the back

Optional Tip: Print just the top 5mm first to test fitment on your unit.

Update – Rev 2

  • Lowered overall height slightly to eliminate notch where the power cable plugs in
  • Changed horizontal vents to vertical (matches side vents + removes need for supports on rear vents)
