Description
This is a full scale model of one cylinder of a 16 cylinder diesel engine found onboard US Navy submarines such as the USS Cod and Cobia, (and many others). The parts were measured from spares at the Manitowoc Maritime Museum (USS Cobia). The print that I made is now at the USS Cod Memorial in Cleveland, to help tell the story of the people and machines that served our country.
This model is intended to be printed full size. It is not for the faint of heart, measuring in at about 8 kg of plastic alone and ten days of print time. Total cost of the materials needed to assemble (includes tape,, paint, etc.) will be about $175-200. The included assembly instructions are essential for putting the model together. The stl files are organized by item number on the drawing. CYL = cylinder parts, PIS are for the piston assembly, and CR prefix files are for the connecting rod. FIN are the few parts needed for final assembly to connect it all together. I could provide uncut files if you ask, but you will need a BIG printer.
The other pdf goes into detail of the workings of the engine, specifically the parts included in this model. Also a bit of history and perspective.
I intend to release a "desk size" version of this assembly, about the size of a soda can. Stay tuned.
Many thanks to the USS Cod and USS Cobia for making this happen. I do not accept tips, but if you want you could donate to them the cost of a coffee - i know it would be appreciated. In addition to photographs of my print I will include pics of the original parts I measured onboard the Cobia.
I count past and present members of the US Armed forces among my heroes. I did not serve, but the sacrifices of those that did (and are) has allowed people like me to live a life of peace and freedom, and for that I am grateful.
